Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed! (Wii)

Hello gamers,
Today’s post is a review of Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed! for the Nintendo Wii. I hope you enjoy it!

Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed! does some things right and wrong. Weather it’s a must buy game is up to you.

The game begins as Crypto (the main character who’s part of an alien race called the “Furons”) talks with his partner in destruction, Pox (a holographic image of what used to be a living alien). Pox tells Crypto that he’s killed so many humans that he had to think of some way of getting rid of them. He tells Crypto that his fast food restaurant, Big Willy (which serves hot dogs), has meat made up of the dead humans. The entire plot of the story is trying to make Big Willy one of the top fast food chains in the world and to stop Colonel Kluckin from destroying Pox’s plans and making his KFC style restaurant the top food source. The plot isn’t entirely bad, but it could be better with more detail and depth. I do think it makes up for the lack of depth with the humorous dialogue between Pox and Crypto. Even though they’re partners, they still don’t really like each other. Pox is the evil genius behind everything, but wants his old body back. Crypto is the blood-thirsty killer who doesn’t care who it is he has to kill as long as he can satisfy his trigger-happy finger (although, he’d really prefer not to kill the “earth babes”). They usually agree with each other on who to kill, but how to kill them brings up arguments between the two characters. That’s really something I liked about the game; they gave the game a dark comedy aspect to the game. The player can choose missions that go along with the story or they can just go around the place and kill all the humans. This is where the game can kind of become repetitive. The gamer is going to do the same thing in every mission basically, and sometimes they will have to fight the occasional boss. It’s the same concept as GTA, only toned down.

As for the controls, I really don’t have anything to complain about. It works well with the Wii-mote, and allows the player to be able to aim instead of most other games where it would have been a lock-on. Use Crypto’s jet-pack by jumping twice, and holding the button to fly over water and other places. Switch weapons by holding down one of the D-Pad buttons or by pressing left or right on the D-Pad. Crypto also has mental abilities which let the player pick up people and cars, hypnotize people into doing what you want, take over bodies and much more. Some (like hypnotize and body snatch) cause the player to have to hold the “A” button where as others (PK hold) make them hold “A” and “B” at the same time while moving them back and forth with the Wii-mote. If there is any problem with the controls, it would be that they didn’t’ let you choose a sensitivity level for the aiming. Besides that, the controls worked pretty well.

The weapons in the game are what really make the game great. Choose to be on foot, in a giant robot or in the air with Crypto’s “Saucer”. On foot, unlock guns as you go though the level. A list of weapons are the Zap-o-matic, the zombie gun and (my personal favorite), the Anal Probe. The weapons in the Big Willy Robot go from throwing up acid onto enemies to blowing buildings down with atomic farts. The Saucer gives the player the classic death ray and a few other weapons such as my favorite, the Quantum-D (a massive explosion that can wipe out all enemies in a three block radius). After you beat the game, you can unlock the shrink ray and turn humans and cars into the size of toys. It’s really quite amazing.

Sadly, the game really doesn’t do so well in the visual aspect of the game. The graphics are some of the worst I’ve seen from the next generation games. The textures don’t look really good and the characters can at times look blocky. They could have done a better job with graphics, but graphics isn’t what should decide on how good the game is.

The idea of giving DAH: BWU a multiplayer mode is a great idea, but it didn’t really work out. They gave the gamer the option to play co-op and competitive, which sounds good until you find out there is only two missions for each mode. I was playing with my brother on the game and I was really disappointed. It didn’t let players have different characters, they couldn’t choose different modes for competitive and it was also annoying that they didn’t let the player have the ability to choose levels from single player to play on co-op. Multiplayer is one of the worst things about the game.

So, is Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed! worth your time? It lets you have a good time killing people for the fast food industry, but doesn’t deliver with replay value and can become repetitive. I give it 6.5 out of 10.

Ups: Very strong single player, script is good, awesome weapons and abilities.
Downs: Can become repetitive, horrible multiplayer, doesn’t have any good replay value.

Well, that’s all for now,
HANG TIGHT GAMERS!!

i played the first destroy all humans game. it felt more like a plot that could only be duplicated as underfunded 1 hour long games with bad plot and script writing, based on what you say though, it seems that the people at THQ are doing their best and putting out as good a game as they can with their somewhat limited resources.

That sounds like a darkly delightful game. Jet Force Gemini, by the way, is a ridiculously cheesy game. That being said, I love it! I still have it and I played it recently. Good times...
