VGC! News: Y360 and DPS3

Hello gamers,
I was looking at IGN.com today and found an interesting article. Since Soul Calibur 4 will be coming out on both the 360 and PS3, Project Soul wanted to give each system it's own character for the game. Could you guess who? For the 360, they're giving the game Yoda (yes, the little green dude off of Star Wars). On PS3, Darth Vader.

Now, I don't know about you, but having Star Wars characters not only seems unfair to the other characters who don't have a butt-kicking Lightsaber which could cut any weapon they have and who also don't have the force, but Star Wars isn't a staple to the 360 or PS3. It would be a little bit more understandable if they used Master Chief from Halo or something like that, but Yoda and Vader? For the full article, go to above IGN link.

The Wii Fit

Hello gamers,
The Wii Fit was launched Wednesday, May 20 and already has sold over 1,000,000 units (and that's almost just Japan). Although I don't have it yet, I'm going to give a little info on what the attachment offers.
The Wii Fit is an attachment to the Wii which allows the player to stand on a platform (supposed to be barefoot) and find out their weight and balance to work out. It's supposed to revolutionize the way we view exercising.

The Wii Fit isn't just a platform you use to do yoga though, you can also use it to play games that require you to use balance. For example, one game is where you need to stand up straight, and lean left and right to hit soccer balls (or dodge shoes). It looks really impressive and allows a real life experience on screen.

The Wii Fit also encourages the Wii members to get up and get active. The Wii Fit finds out your weight (which will only be seen by you) and will give you a good idea of how many push-ups you should do or how long you should stretch. You are also given an instructor who will help you out if you need information a work out a routine or if you need encouragement. You can choose your instructor and continue with the exercise. It also gives you day to day achievements and goals. View how far you've come from day 1.

I think this is a brilliant idea from Nintendo. For one, it's going to improvise on family unity during game time; and it's also going to help not only adults, but kids get into shape. I'm definitely going to purchase the Wii Fit. I'll give you a review of the system when I purchase it.

Well, that's all for now,

What Do You Think?

Hello gamers,
Since the news has been slow and there really isn't any more games for me to review right now, I was wondering what you guys thought of my blog.

I decided that in order for this blog to be successful, I will need to keep the readers interested. I figured that the only way to do that is to find out what they like.

So, do you guys like that I make a post every Friday, or would you like it more than just that? Maybe I should focus more on news than reviews? Perhaps I should have a more balance of information regarding news and game reviews from all three systems? Maybe you would like me try add some new things to my blog or even a new layout.

All of this I would enjoy to find out from you guys. As always, you don't have to answer the questions, but it would really help me out a lot if I'm going to get serious with this blog.

Thanks again,
Oddball

VGC! News - Nintendo Channel

Hello Gamers,
I have a little VGC! News I would like to share with you guys.

As Wii owners already know, a new channel is ready for download. The channel is called “Nintendo Channel”. I was surprised by the Wii-mail I received from Nintendo. I wasn’t really sure what the channel was until I downloaded it. I would say it’s one of the best channels they’ve made yet.

Upon entering the channel, a video pops up giving you a small tutorial showing you everything the channel has. It’s really based upon information for new and older gamers. They allow you to view videos of games, trailers, interview and much more. You can adjust the volume of the video, zoom in, pause and stop. It has a very clear picture and the average video lasts about three minutes. One of the best things about the video is that you can see the game and its game play before buying it.

Not only are there videos, they also have a little option to find games on the Wii that will suit you. You can pick categories such as title, genera, and ratings and if the game is more focused on multiplayer or single player. You also have the option to tell Nintendo that you’re a hardcore gamer who has been playing games for a while, or a new one. They will find games they think will interest you. They let you have the option of receiving mail from Nintendo to your Wii console or not. One other little feature is the ability to look at the game, see what the main idea of the game is, look at some websites that have info on the game and you can even purchase it online! One bad thing about finding games that might suit you is that the rating system is based on the players, and not Nintendo. It’s not always reliable.

One last feature is one of the best features the Wii has offered. Have you wanted to buy a DS game that you’ve never heard of, but want to try it before you buy it? Nintendo is giving you that chance. The Nintendo channel allows you to download demos, via the DS Download on your DS, and play them as much as you want for free! Play Brain Age 2, DS puzzle games and much more. It lets you try the weird games to make sure they’re fun. For me, this is a really big step for Nintendo. They could actually let you in the future play demos of older system titles or even Wii titles (not to mention for free).

If you have a Wii and it’s glowing blue, get the Nintendo channel!

Gears of War (Xbox 360)

Hello gamers,
Today’s post is a review of Xbox 360’s game of the year, Gears of War.

To start off with this review, I want to express the knowledge that most people, when reading my review, will highly disagree with me. I totally encourage those who don’t agree with my opinion say so in the comment section. I would really like to hear what you have to say and why you think I should have given it more credit.

Let’s go ahead and talk about the story. Marcus Fenix is the main character, and he is locked up in jail because of disobeying orders. Dom, a member of the Delta Squad, is out to free him. Since almost everyone on Earth has been killed, they need as many people as they can get. He gets Marcus out and later Marcus becomes part of the Delta Squad group. The alien group responsible for all the chaos is the Locus Horde. These “Locus” look kind of like humans, but are colored gray and have very strange voices. They have the ability to make holes come out of the ground at any time where they can send troops. That’s mostly why so many people on Earth have died; they can’t know when and where the holes are going to come out. It’s Marcus’s job to kill all the locus and end the war. So, on that note, let’s go ahead and talk about the story. If we’re going to be honest, is the story really anything different than other alien games? I want to you tell me if this sounds different: Earth has been under attack by a large alien fleet and the human race is almost wiped out totally. You and some other troops must stop the alien threat at any cost. Now, after reading that, does that sound familiar? Some may thing I’m talking about Gears of war, but I was actually talking about Halo. Sure, there is some difference between the two games with the background plot, but the main plot is still the same. I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of having the same story over and over again. I don’t thing this game did anything different with the story besides the typical “humans killing aliens” plot. I didn’t feel connected with the characters like I do in many other games. I believe the story is amazingly overrated. There is nothing original about using the same story over and over again, except with some background information and the ending.

As for the weapons, they still didn’t add anything new. Choose to get the basic assault rifle, the basic shotgun, the basic sniper rifle and some pistols. Wow…..so…cool….except it isn’t. Sure, they added a chainsaw addition to the assault rifle to make sure that the main people who buy it (those with lust for blood and violence) can have lots of alien gore. Sure, the chainsaw attachment is a cool idea, but not anything I would say is amazing. The best weapon out of all the weapons is the grenade. The grenades in the game are like little spiked balls with a chain attached to the end. If you run up to enemies, you can stick it too them. It’s really quite cool.
Controls for Gears of War are actually okay. The game is played in third person so you can switch angles and other things. They wanted to give the gamers a paint-ball feel to the game. In the game, take cover behind walls or little objects laying on the ground. The player can blind fire (meaning to fire without looking) behind cover and they added a “one-button” action to it so it’s not confusing to jump across to other cover. Just simply press the “A” button to hide, and use the joystick to aim in the direction you want to go to jump across to another wall, run to the next object in the next room or rush your enemies. Sure, it’s not like they invented or changed the idea of hiding behind cover, but it adds a tactical prospective to the game that most shooters lack *cough* Halo *cough*. Aim the weapon by holding the lower “L” button or just run through without aiming. So, the controls aren’t bad and I believe that simple is better.

Graphics aren’t bad for a 360 game, but it’s not quite as good as Halo 3’s graphics. Now, graphics shouldn’t be a feature which controls your decision, but they do matter.

Okay, let’s talk about Multiplayer. Xbox has been known to have amazing multiplayer, but this game really lacks something amazing. The player can choose to play co-op on a single system, play co-op with friends or do normal multiplayer. With co-op, play with another player to continue the story like most co-ops do. With normal multiplayer, they let the player choose like four different game modes. All of them are team. You can’t choose what weapons you want to have, they don’t have many levels and it’s so repetitive. Unlike Halo, you don’t just keep playing the same thing over and over again, they let you switch it up. Gears of War wasn’t made for multiplayer, just co-op.

So, what’s so great about Gears of War? What makes it a “must buy game” that many people told me it would be? It’s online multiplayer sucks, nothing really new with the story, doesn’t have any new weapons and was very sloppy with how long the game was. Is it the worse game of all time? No. Could it have been better? Yes. I just want to know why we are giving a “game of the year” sticker to a game company that doesn’t deserve it? Were there no good games that year? Well, I do believe that most websites need to get over how good it looks and find out what separates that game from other shooters. With that I give Gears of War 7.5 out of 10.

Ups: Good controls, some nice levels, pretty nice graphics.
Downs: Horrible multiplayer, not original, no new weapons, story sucks.
